Your negative keywords

Paste the list into Google Ads under Search keywords, Negative search keywords. Review it first: remove anything you actually sell.

Paste the searches that triggered your ads and we’ll flag the ones this list would block, so you can see the waste.
Cutting wasted spend

How negative keywords save your budget.

Without them, part of every local ad budget goes to searches that were never going to become customers. Negative keywords are the fastest fix.

Why do I need negative keywords?

Google matches your keywords to many related searches. Without negatives, a roofing ad can show for “roofing jobs”, “how to fix a roof leak yourself” or “roofing shingles home depot”, and you pay for every one of those clicks.

Which match type should I use?

Use phrase match for most negatives. Use exact match when a word is fine in other searches but one exact search is not. Remember that negatives don’t cover plurals and misspellings, so add those too.

Campaign, ad group or shared list?

Put negatives that apply everywhere (jobs, DIY, training) in a shared negative keyword list attached to every campaign. Use ad group negatives to steer searches to the right ad group, for example blocking “commercial” in a residential ad group.

How often should I add negatives?

Every week while a campaign is new, then every two weeks. We read every search term in the first 72 hours after launch and turn anything irrelevant into a negative before it eats the budget.

FAQ

Negative keywords, answered.

What are negative keywords in Google Ads?

Negative keywords tell Google which searches should not show your ad. Adding "jobs" as a negative, for example, stops a plumbing ad from showing to people searching for plumbing jobs, so you don't pay for clicks that will never become customers.

Should negative keywords be broad, phrase or exact match?

Phrase match is the safest default for most local businesses: it blocks any search containing the words in that order. Negative broad blocks searches containing all the words in any order. Negative exact only blocks that exact search. Negative keywords do not match close variants or plurals, so add those separately.

How many negative keywords should I have?

There is no right number. Start with a list like the one this tool builds, then add new negatives every week from your search terms report. A well-run local account usually builds up hundreds over time.

Should I add "free" as a negative keyword?

Only if you never offer anything free. If you offer free estimates, free consultations or free inspections, people searching for those are often your best leads, so leave "free" off and block specific phrases instead.

Where do I add negative keywords in Google Ads?

In Google Ads, go to Audiences, keywords and content, then Search keywords, then Negative search keywords. You can add them to a campaign, an ad group, or a shared negative keyword list that several campaigns use.

How do I find negative keywords from my search terms?

Open the search terms report for the last 30 days, look for searches that don't match what you sell, and add the unwanted word as a negative. Paste your search terms into this tool and it flags the ones your list would block.
