ChatGPT now shows ads, and local businesses can buy them. Ads appear below ChatGPT's answers, labeled Sponsored, and OpenAI's self-serve Ads Manager has been open to US advertisers since May 5, 2026. Starting this month, Media Spearhead manages ChatGPT Ads for our clients, alongside the Google Ads, SEO and AEO work we already do for you.
This post is our update to you: what changed, whether it makes sense for your business, and exactly what we need from you if you want to start.
What are ChatGPT Ads?
ChatGPT Ads are sponsored units that appear below a ChatGPT response, clearly labeled and kept separate from the answer. They are shown to logged-in adults on the Free and Go plans. Each ad has your business name, a small icon, a title, a short description and a link to your landing page, and some formats include a button such as Book Now.
The audience is large. OpenAI said in October 2026 that more than a billion people use ChatGPT every week, and Reuters reported that ChatGPT Ads now run in 89 countries, with more than 100,000 advertisers since launch.
How are they different from Google Ads?
Google Ads reach people who are searching for a service right now ("emergency plumber near me"). ChatGPT Ads reach people a step earlier, while they are still asking questions: what is wrong, what it should cost, whether to repair or replace, who to trust.
| Google Ads | ChatGPT Ads | |
|---|---|---|
| Where it shows | Google search results and Maps | Below a ChatGPT answer, labeled Sponsored |
| What triggers it | Keywords the person types | The context and intent of the conversation |
| Customer mindset | Ready to call | Still researching and comparing |
| Local targeting | Radius, city, ZIP code | US state, DMA or ZIP code |
| How you pay | Mostly per click | Per view (CPM) or per click (CPC) |
For most of our clients, Google Ads stays the main engine. ChatGPT Ads are a new channel to test next to it, not a replacement.
Can my business run ChatGPT Ads?
Most local service businesses can. OpenAI's ad policies primarily allow local services such as home services, auto repair, cleaning and moving. A few categories need extra care:
- Dental, medical and med spas: reviewed case by case in the US, and OpenAI may ask for proof of licensure.
- Insurance, mortgages and loans: reviewed case by case in the US.
- Law firms: allowed only where the firm is licensed to practice.
- Not allowed today: housing rentals and sales (so real estate listings are out) and alcohol.

What do ChatGPT Ads cost?
OpenAI sets a $25 minimum daily budget per campaign and suggests starting click bids around $3 to $5. At $50 a day, that is roughly 10 to 17 clicks a day, or about 300 to 500 clicks a month. Real costs depend on your market, your ad and how many competitors are bidding, and OpenAI treats daily budgets as averages, so one day can spend more than another.
New ad platforms usually start with fewer advertisers bidding. That is the main reason we think it is worth testing now rather than next year.
What do we need from you to get started?
OpenAI requires the business itself to own the account, so a few steps are yours. We walk you through all of them on one short call.
- Create your ChatGPT Ads account in OpenAI's Ads Manager with your business details and card. Ad spend is billed to you directly by OpenAI.
- Complete verification. OpenAI verifies every advertiser, and this can take up to seven business days, so it is worth starting early.
- Invite Media Spearhead to the account so we can build and manage your campaigns.
- Approve your landing page. The ad and the page must promote the same offer, and OpenAI's ad checker has to be able to read the page. We build or adjust the page and check your site lets it in.
From there we handle the rest: the campaigns, context hints for each service, the ZIP codes you serve, negative phrases, tracking with OpenAI's pixel, UTM tags and call tracking, and a weekly review with cost per lead compared directly against your Google Ads.
What about getting recommended by ChatGPT for free?
That is a different job, and it matters just as much. Ads sit below the answer; answer engine optimization (AEO) is how a business gets named inside the answer. It is also how most of our own new clients have found us lately, which we wrote about in our AEO case study.
The strongest plan does both: be the business ChatGPT names, and be the sponsored option right below it. If you are already an SEO or AEO client, ChatGPT Ads build on the same pages and facts we have been sharpening for you.
Should you try it?
ChatGPT Ads are a good fit if you are a local service business in an allowed category, your Google Ads already convert, and you can set aside a test budget of at least $25 a day for a month or two. They are a poor fit if your Google Ads are not profitable yet. Fix that first, and we will help.
Want to be early? See how it works on our ChatGPT Ads management page, or book a free call and we will tell you whether your industry is eligible, what a starting budget looks like and how we would track every lead. You can also call us at (904) 341-5986.
